Vercel spending limit
How do I set a spending limit on Vercel?
You set a spending limit on Vercel by turning on Spend Management in your team billing settings and entering an On-Demand Budget. You have to explicitly check the option to pause production deployments if you want traffic to stop, because entering a dollar figure alone only triggers email alerts while metered billing keeps running.
Spend Management is included at no extra cost on the $20-per-month Pro plan and on Enterprise plans using Flexible Commitment. For new Pro accounts, Vercel turns on email notifications at a default spend amount of $200 per billing cycle, but your production sites will not shut down unless you tell the platform to pause them.
How Spend Management works on Vercel
Vercel tracks your account usage per billing cycle. On the Pro plan, you pay a $20 monthly platform fee that gives you one deploying seat and a $20 monthly usage credit across all managed infrastructure resources. If you use What does Vercel actually cost on Hobby vs Pro? as a baseline, metered usage only starts costing you money once you exhaust that $20 credit.
Once your team burns through the $20 credit, you switch to on-demand billing. Spend Management monitors this extra metered spend across every project under your team. On Enterprise teams with the Flexible Commitment plan, it tracks the metered usage drawing down against your prepaid balance instead.
When you configure your spend amount, shown in your billing settings as your On-Demand Budget, you choose what happens when your usage hits that exact number. Vercel lets you pick three actions:
- Receive an automated notification
- Trigger a custom webhook
- Pause the production deployment of all your projects
Only team members with the Owner or Billing role can view, enable, or change Spend Management. Members with developer or viewer permissions cannot touch these settings.
There is an operational detail here that catches people off guard. Vercel checks your metered resource usage every few minutes rather than running a real-time stream. Because these checks are not continuous, notifications, webhooks, and project pausing can trigger several minutes after your team actually crosses the spend amount. If you receive a massive traffic flood, your bill can climb slightly past your budget before the system catches it and executes your rules.
Step-by-step: Enable Spend Management in the dashboard
Configuring your budget in the web interface takes about two minutes. If you set or lower the spend amount below what your team has already spent this cycle, Spend Management triggers every configured action on its very next check, so check your current month-to-date charges before saving.
- Log into your Vercel account and switch to your team dashboard.
- Open Settings in the left sidebar.
- Select Billing from the menu.
- Locate the Spend Management section and toggle the switch to enabled.
- Enter your desired On-Demand Budget amount in USD.
- If you want to stop usage overages, toggle Pause Production Deployments to enabled.
- Type your team name into the confirmation field and click Continue to confirm the pause behavior.
Your changes save immediately. If you ever need to inspect what was changed and who did it, all Spend Management activity - including creating budgets, updating limits, and pausing or unpausing projects - is recorded in the Activity section of your team dashboard sidebar.
Managing your budget using the Vercel CLI
If you prefer provisioning and managing infrastructure from the terminal, you can manage your On-Demand Budget with the official CLI. You will need vercel@65.11.0 or later to use the current command syntax; older versions still support vercel budgets, but that command prints a deprecation warning.
You must be logged in as an Owner or Billing role user. To create or update your limit, turn on the deployment pause switch, and point Vercel to an alert endpoint, run this:
vercel billing budgets set --amount 200 --pause --webhook https://example.com/spendTo see how much on-demand spend your team has accrued during the current billing period relative to your configured cap, run:
vercel billing budgets inspectIf you ever need to tear down the budget entirely, run:
vercel billing budgets remove --yesWhat happens when Pause Production Deployments triggers
Setting a budget number without enabling the pause option does nothing to halt your traffic. If your goal is to prevent a run on your card, you have to turn on Pause Production Deployments.
When your usage reaches your spend amount and the pause triggers, production deployments across all projects on your team immediately stop serving traffic. Your websites, APIs, and functions become completely unavailable. Anyone attempting to visit your production domains will see a 503 DEPLOYMENT_PAUSED error page. If you are dealing with traffic spikes, check How do I stop bots and DDoS traffic from running up my Vercel bill? to filter scrapers before they burn your budget.
Pausing your production deployments cuts the biggest compute bills, but it is not a complete account freeze. It does not stop everything:
- Preview deployments remain intact and active.
- AI Gateway API key usage continues to run and bill to your team.
- v0 usage billed to the team keeps running and counting toward the spend amount.
- Stored resources are never deleted. You will continue to be billed for Deployment Storage and Functions Storage (billed in GB-months), Vercel Blob storage, and Vercel Container Registry image storage.
If you hit your budget and your projects pause, they do not automatically turn back on if you go into your settings and raise the budget amount. You must manually resume each project one by one through the dashboard or by sending a request to the Vercel REST API.
Spend Management notifications and webhooks
Vercel wires up baseline alerts automatically as soon as you enter a budget amount. Web and email notifications are configured for 50%, 75%, and 100% of your spend amount right out of the box. Pro accounts also receive a built-in notice when infrastructure usage crosses 75% of the $20 included monthly credit, followed by daily and weekly summary emails once on-demand usage begins.
Threshold alert preferences are personal. They are managed under Settings > My Notifications > Team > Spend Management. When you change settings there, you are only updating preferences for your own account; other Owners and Billing members must configure their own delivery options.
SMS alerts work differently:
- SMS alerts are only dispatched when your team hits 100% of your spend amount, never at the lower thresholds.
- If your user profile already has a mobile phone number saved, SMS alerts are enabled by default.
If you run an internal alerting pipeline, you can supply an HTTPS POST endpoint. Vercel hits this public URL when your team hits 50%, 75%, and 100% of the spend amount (older budgets created before September 2025 only post at 100%). You can verify incoming webhooks by comparing the x-vercel-signature header against the SHA secret generated when you saved the webhook URL.
The JSON payload contains four clean properties:
{
"budgetAmount": 200,
"currentSpend": 150,
"teamId": "team_1234567890",
"thresholdPercent": 75
}Both budgetAmount and currentSpend are provided as integer values in USD.
What Spend Management does not cover
Indie developers often assume that setting an On-Demand Budget caps their entire invoice. That is not how Vercel billing works. Spend Management only applies to metered infrastructure usage beyond your monthly plan credit. Fixed monthly fees, team seats, and Marketplace integrations are billed separately and will be charged regardless of your spend cap.

If you subscribe to three add-on modules and have two paid team seats, those line items will appear on your monthly invoice even if your projects are paused by Spend Management all month long. To debug surprises on your bill, see Why is my Vercel bill so high, and what usually causes it?.
Catching spikes earlier with Costbrake
Vercel checks metered usage every few minutes, but it only offers fixed dollar thresholds and an aggressive killswitch that takes down every project on your team at once. Costbrake offers an earlier safety line across Vercel and 22 other providers - including AWS, Cloudflare, Supabase, and OpenAI.
Costbrake monitors your live on-demand Vercel spend and billing charges, checking every 5 minutes on paid plans and every 2 minutes during an active spike. Instead of waiting until you cross a rigid ceiling, it fires a spike alert if an hour costs more than 3x your 7-day baseline and at least $5 more than normal. It also projects month-end spending based on your last 72 hours of activity.
When a bill runs out of control, you can trigger opt-in, reversible brakes directly from Costbrake. For Vercel, this lets you turn on Attack Challenge Mode to block scrapers with a browser challenge while letting verified bots through, or pause a single problematic project instead of killing production across your entire company. You can try it on a 14-day Pro trial without a card, or review Costbrake pricing. To connect your team using an Owner or Billing token, check out the agent setup instructions.
Questions and answers
Is Spend Management turned on by default on Vercel?
For new Pro accounts, Vercel turns on Spend Management notifications by default with a spend amount of $200 per billing cycle. However, the Pause Production Deployments setting is turned off by default, meaning Vercel will send warning emails but will not stop your traffic or halt on-demand charges.
Does setting a spend amount automatically stop my site?
No, entering a spend amount on its own does not stop metered usage. You must explicitly toggle on Pause Production Deployments and type your team name to confirm the setting, which instructs Vercel to halt production deployments when the budget amount is met.
What happens to visitors when a budget limit pauses my deployment?
Visitors who try to access any of your team production domains while deployments are paused will see a 503 DEPLOYMENT_PAUSED error page. Preview deployments will continue to function normally, but public production websites, APIs, and functions will remain offline until you resume them.
Can I unpause projects automatically by raising the spend amount?
No, increasing your On-Demand Budget will not automatically bring your projects back online. Once a project is paused by Spend Management, you must manually resume it on an individual basis through the Vercel dashboard or via the Vercel REST API.
Who on my team can turn on Spend Management?
Only team members who hold the Owner or Billing role have permission to view, enable, or modify Spend Management settings in the dashboard or via the Vercel CLI. Standard Members, Developers, and Viewers cannot manage budgets.
